Model and blogger Natalie Suarez grew up in Los Angeles but has been living in NYC since she was 15. Combining influences from the two coolest cities we know, she’s mastered the art of off-duty style. We grabbed five minutes with her during a street-style shoot in sunny downtown Manhattan to find out how she stays looking so cool in the NYC heat, and to ask which Dorothy Perkins pieces she’s currently lusting after.
What is the one thing you would never throw out of your wardrobe?
Natalie: I have these amazing snakeskin Chelsea boots from Modern Vice that I literally love! I could never throw them away. Plus, it’s a brand my boyfriend started up and he would kill me if I got rid of them!
Do you try and follow fashion trends or do you prefer to break out on your own?
Natalie: I don’t always follow fashion trends as I try to have a more eclectic take on my style. I like to mix pieces and throw things together that sometimes break the rules. I’d say my style is kinda boho with a bit of a rock’n’roll edge thrown in.
What are your favourite pieces from today’s shoot?
Natalie: You know what? I really, really love the jelly sandals! They are so comfy and really cute. The big statement necklace is also really great and I love the print on the jumpsuit.
What one item are you lusting after this summer?
Natalie: I’ve seen these really cute Marni sandals that are really colourful that I think would work with so many outfits.
Your sister Dylanna is also a blogger and a photographer. What items do you want to steal from her wardrobe and what does she borrow from yours?
Natalie: Dylanna has loads of kimonos which is great as they are so hot right now. She has all kinds – beaded, tie-dyed, sheer, fringed – so I’d definitely steal any one of those! I guess what she steals from me is probably jewellery, and she loves my hats too.
You are a seriously stylish girl but you can’t always get it right! Do you have any fashion faux pas or an outfit you totally regret?
Natalie: Erm, that’s a tough question! I guess there are the classics like velour track suits and scrunchies. But actually, scrunchies are having a thing again and I kinda like them. I also don’t always get the whole socks and Birkenstocks styling thing. I mean, sometimes it looks really great but it is sort of hit and miss.
Your boyfriend and your sister both photograph you for your blog. Who is the easier to work with?
Natalie: That’s easy; Dylanna! She is really great at directing me and letting me know what looks cute. My Boyfriend is always rushing me as he’d much rather be doing something else!
